Rila Monastery, the church of the Holy Virgin – Photo by Zig Zag Holidays
Route highlights:
The Boyana church is considered as one of Bulgaria’s most significant historical treasures dating back to the 11th century and is on UNESCO’s World Cultural Heritage List. Most remarkable are the frescoes, painted by an unknown artist, which exhibit a new humanistic tendency in medieval art.
Rila Monastery is the biggest orthodox sanctuary in Bulgaria and is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. It was founded in the 10th century by Saint Ivan Rilski who lived in a tiny cave in the mountains. In the architectural complex most impressive is the main church of the Holy Virgin – its interior is covered with painted frescoes and the wooden iconostasis has a golden appeal. You can visit the monastery museum, the authentic cell, and the medieval kitchen. A short walk will bring you to Saint Ivan Rilski’s hermitage cave, which is in the deep forest above the monastery and in the boundaries of a Nature Park.
