This tour will lead you to the centre of the Rhodope Mountains in Shiroka Laka – an architectural reserve that preserves the Bulgarian architectural style from XVIII – XIX century and is also the birthplace of the Bulgarian bagpipe music. You can make a short hike, try Rhodope food specialties and be involved into a traditional Mummers dances for “Pesponedelnik” holiday. The Shiroka Laka Mummers called “Pesyatsi” or “Startsi” (meaning the old men), are dancing with their bells and red swords from house to house to scare the evil creatures away, and for health and prosperity. After the walk, they head to the centre of the village where they make rituals for a prosperous cultivating year and health. There are plenty of Mummer groups from different parts of the country and every group has different masks and dances. People say that if a mummer jumps over you, you will have luck all the year around, so be prepared.
Day 1: (03.03.18) In this day you will travel to the Rhodope Mountains. The program will be made depending on your time of arrival. If the program starts in the morning there is an option to make a short hike on the way and to taste a traditional Rhodopean food. In the late evening, you will reach the village of Shiroka Laka where you will meet the local mummers in the real action dancing between the houses. Overnight in Smolyan and around.
Day 2: At 3rd of March Bulgaria celebrates the national holiday. This day you will have many options before the meeting with the mummers in the evening for their dance between the houses. There is an option for visiting the Momtchil’s fortress with 360 degrees panorama on the top. Other option to go to the Smolyan lakes and couple of natural reserves in the area.
Day 3: A day for the Shiroka Laka carnival where you will meet dozens of Mummers in the centre of the village. After the carnival, the program ends in Sofia.
