On the Day of Trifon Zarezan, the guardian of vine-growers, we celebrate our love for wine! According to the old traditions, this is the day when you prune the old twigs of the vine, so that it can sprout anew in the spring. The festivities on the Day of Trifon Zarezan (meaning Trifon The Pruner) mark the dividing line between the ending winter and the nearing spring. Lots of rituals are performed to strengthen and ensure a triumph of vitality and fruitfulness. The vine-growers with their families go together to their piece of land to show their respect to it and inspire it for a new life with the first agricultural ritual in the new year, with festive songs and dances, with a ritual table laid among the vineyards, with priests saying their prayers for fertility and a good vintage… The more wine is poured on that day, the more generous the next harvest will be!
We will take you to a wine region close to Plovdiv, appr. 140 km away from Sofia. By hearing more stories about the origins of the holiday, attending the traditional celebrations on the vineyards and tasting young wine accompanied by typical meals you will feel like a local and become part of the main Bulgarian wine holiday!
You have definitely recognized that the date matches with the Catholic St. Valentine’s Day which was not very popular in Bulgaria. But recently you can see lots of hearts, red balloons, roses and decorated shop windows dedicated to St. Valentine’s Day… So, let’s celebrate both love and wine together! Is there a better combination?
