The Boyana church is considered as one of Bulgaria’s most significant historical treasures dating back to the 11th century and is on UNESCO’s World Cultural Heritage List. Most remarkable are the frescoes, painted by an unknown artist, which exhibit a new humanistic tendency in the mediaeval art.
The Dragalevtsi monastery or “Virgin Mary“ lies at the foothills of Vitosha Mountain. During the period of Turkish rule in Bulgaria it was a center of Bulgarian education and culture, the national hero Vassil Levski is known to have stayed there often.
The Lozen Monastery “St. Spas” is said to date since the begining of the 13th century and is known as an important literary center during the years under Ottoman rule. The murals in the church are so colourful and vivid that they маке the visitors feel cheerful and optimistic.
The Kremikovtsi monastery “St. George” has performed an important role during the Middle Ages, as a vital element of the Sofia Mala Sveta Gora. The murals of the monastery church are of exceptional historic value for the posterity. After the latest renovation they came to shine with all their splendour and singularity.
